Abstract

This study examines the rising incidence of divorce in Kano State, Nigeria, in the 21st century, identifying communication barriers as a major contributing factor. It draws on Qur’anic injunctions, authentic Hadiths, and insights from both classical and contemporary Islamic scholarship to underscore the vital role of effective communication in sustaining marital harmony. The research reveals that socio-cultural expectations, rigid gender roles, and limited emotional literacy often hinder open and honest dialogue between spouses, frequently resulting in unresolved conflicts and eventual separation. Grounded in Islamic principles such as consultation (shūrā), mutual respect, and compassion, the study advocates for improved communication as a key solution to the growing trend of marital breakdowns in Kano. It offers practical recommendations for couples, religious leaders, and policymakers to foster and promote Islamic communication ethics within the institution of marriage.
